Verdict: prepay if you might stop, bill pay if you will not
Pick Three prepay (Super Surfer, €20 every 28 days) if you want Three’s own unlimited 5G with no contract, no credit check and no April price clause, and you can live with 200 combined minutes and texts.
Pick Three bill pay (SIM Core, €20 a month, 12 months) if you talk a lot, want 35 GB rather than 30 GB in the EU, and you are going to pay every month anyway. Over a year it is €20 cheaper than Super Surfer before the April step, and it comes with a €2.50 rise the first April inside your term.
Skip both if the only thing you want is unlimited 5G on Three radio. 48 sells that at €12.99 rolling, €155.88 a year, on the same masts.

Every Three plan you can buy in August 2026
Three sells three prepay plans and three SIM-only bill-pay plans to new customers. All six include All You Can Eat 5G data in the Republic of Ireland and access to Three+ offers. The differences are minutes, EU data, cadence and the small print.

Three’s price guide also lists a legacy “3 Prepay 20” and “3 Prepay 30” (unlimited data, 30 GB and 45 GB EU) for customers already on them. They are not sold to new joiners, so they are not in the table. Bill pay with a phone uses different plans again (Essentials 5G at €44.99 and Freedom 5G at €60, both 24 months) and is covered below.
What a year on each plan actually costs
This is the table Three’s plan page does not show you. Prepay runs on 28-day cycles, so a calendar year needs 13 top-ups. Bill pay bills 12 times. And since 30 July 2025 every new Three bill-pay SIM-only contract carries a fixed €2.50-a-month increase from the April bill each year, inside the minimum term.

Three things jump out.
- The €20 plans are not the same €20. Super Surfer costs €260 a year; SIM Core costs €240, or about €252.50 if your term started in November and five bills land after the April step. Either way bill pay is cheaper on paper, and it has unlimited minutes instead of 200.
- Freedom is a 24-month plan with a six-month price. €14 × 6 then €28 × 6 is €252 in year one, then €336 in year two before the April steps. Three’s own price-guide example takes Freedom 24M to €30.50 after the first April and €33 after the second. You need the FREEDOM14 promo code to get the teaser at all.
- Flex is the flexibility tax. €34.99 rolling is €419.88 a year for the same unlimited 5G that Super Surfer prepay gives you for €260. The extra buys unlimited minutes, 60 GB EU and a 30-day rolling contract rather than a 28-day voucher. That is a lot of money for two days and a direct debit.
The 28-day catch on Three prepay
Three prepay is a voucher plan. You top up by the plan amount or more in one go and the allowances switch on for 28 days. Everything about how it behaves follows from that.
- Thirteen cycles a year. 28 days × 13 = 364 days. A €20 plan is €260 a year, a €25 plan is €325. Every “€20 a month” comparison with bill pay is off by one top-up.
- Top up the full amount and the clock resets. Three’s terms say a top-up of €20 or more during an existing 28-day period re-activates the plan and starts a new 28 days. Unused allowances do not carry over. If you just want a bit of credit mid-cycle for something outside the bundle, top up by less than the plan amount, for example €5 or €10.
- Credit expires after 100 days. Since April 2026 Three prepay credit expires 100 days after activation, down from 180. That matters if you let the plan lapse and sit on a balance.
- Miss the top-up and you are on base rates. Three’s prepay price guide lists 45c a minute plus a 12c connection fee, 20c a text and €1.99 per MB of Irish data outside the plan. A single forgotten cycle can cost more than the plan would have.
- The reminder text is not a promise. Three says it sends an SMS near the end of the 28 days and, in the same clause, says it does not warrant that it will. Set your own reminder or use the recurring top-up in My3.
- Boosters are per 28 days too. A €5 voice booster adds 100 minutes to Super Surfer, a €5 data booster adds 1 GB to Total Talker, and a €5 international-minutes booster adds 100 minutes to any of the three. Buy two boosters a cycle and Super Surfer costs more than SIM Core.
What prepay does not have: a credit check, a direct-debit mandate, a cancellation fee, a paper-bill charge or an April price clause. If you go abroad for three months, you stop paying. That is the whole case for it.
The bill-pay small print Three prints in the price guide
Three’s bill-pay price guide (February 2026 edition) is where the real terms live. These are the lines that change the sums.
- Fixed annual increase. If your contract began on or after 30 July 2025, the monthly charge rises by €2.50 on SIM-only plans and €3 on non-SIM-only (phone) plans from every April bill. It applies inside the minimum term. Three’s worked examples: SIM Core €20 then €22.50; SIM Freedom 24M €28 then €30.50 then €33. If your first bill falls in March, the first April is skipped.
- Cancellation fee. For 12-month plans it is the remaining monthly charges in the term. For the 24-month SIM-only plans (Freedom 24M, Essentials 24M) it is the remaining charges up to month 14, not 24. Three’s example: cancel Essentials 24M after 11 months and you owe €25 × 3 = €75.
- Non-direct-debit charge. €4.57 a month if you pay any other way. Paper bills are €3.49 each for agreements since November 2023. Changing your number is €15.25.
- Promo code. Freedom’s €14 for six months needs the code FREEDOM14 at checkout. Without it you pay €28 from month one.
- Credit check. Bill pay is a credit agreement. Three typically asks for photo ID, proof of address and bank details, and can refuse or ask for a deposit. Prepay needs none of that.
- Cooling-off. 14 days if you bought online or by phone, as standard under Irish distance-selling rules. In-store sales do not get it.
What “unlimited” means on Three prepay versus bill pay
Three calls its unlimited data All You Can Eat. The data part is the same on both sides: Republic of Ireland only, on your handset, no gigabyte cap printed on the plan page. The fair-use limits that differ are on calls and texts.

The practical difference is Super Surfer. It is the only Three unlimited-data plan with a hard 200-unit cap on calls and texts combined. If you make a 15-minute call a day you will burn through it in two weeks and be paying 45c a minute. Total Talker fixes the minutes but drops you to 10 GB. Connect Complete fixes both for €25, which is €325 a year, more than Core and Freedom and not far off Flex.
Roaming, eSIM, Three+ and phones
EU roaming
Bill pay wins here. SIM Core carries 35 GB EU roaming, Freedom and Flex 60 GB EU roaming. On prepay, Connect Complete has 37 GB EU roaming, Super Surfer 30 GB EU roaming and Total Talker 10 GB EU roaming, and Three’s price guide flags a higher out-of-bundle EU data rate on Total Talker than on the other prepay plans. eSIM
Three’s eSIM page lists “instant eSIM access” on SIM Core, SIM Freedom 24M and on the Super Surfer prepay plan, delivered by QR code or automatically on compatible phones, and says existing customers can swap a plastic SIM for an eSIM through Replace my SIM. So eSIM is not a reason to choose bill pay over prepay on Three. It is a reason to choose Three over 48, which still posts a plastic SIM. More in eSIM in Ireland.
Three+
Three+ is the same on both: presale tickets for 3Arena and 3Olympia, retail discounts, competitions. Prepay customers get it. It does not tip the decision.
Bill pay with a phone
If you want a handset on the bill, you leave SIM-only entirely. Three’s phone plans are Essentials 5G at €44.99 and Freedom 5G at €60, both 24-month minimum term, 86 GB and 103 GB EU data respectively, with the €3 April rise rather than €2.50. The phone price is split into an upfront amount and the 24 monthly bills. Prepay has no equivalent; you buy the phone outright or on Three’s prepay handset prices and pay the €20 or €25 voucher on top. For a €1,000 phone, 24 months of Essentials 5G is well over €1,000 in plan alone, so do the sum against buying the phone SIM-free and running Super Surfer or 48.
Moving between Three prepay and bill pay on the same number
You can switch either way without leaving Three or losing the number.
- Prepay to bill pay. Log in to My3, scroll to “Looking for an upgrade”, pick Bill Pay and a plan, then follow the prompts. Or message Three, ring 1913, or go into a store. You will go through the bill-pay sign-up: ID, address, bank, credit check. Three’s prepay terms say no part of the prepay plan carries over, and leftover prepay credit does not transfer, so run the balance down first.
- Bill pay to prepay. Possible once the minimum term is done (or earlier if you pay the cancellation fee). You keep the SIM and number; Three moves the account type and you top up from then on. Check the final bill for the non-direct-debit charge if you cancelled the mandate early.
- Either to 48. That is a normal port: buy the 48 SIM, give 48 your Three number, done in a day. Steps in how to switch mobile. You stay on the same masts.

The 48 question: when neither Three option beats it
48 is owned by Three and runs on Three’s network. Its unlimited 5G membership is €12.99 rolling with 20 GB EU/UK roaming, 5,000 minutes and 5,000 texts, and no contract. Over a year that is €155.88. The cheapest Three plan with unlimited data costs €240 on bill pay or €260 on prepay. So for a plain unlimited SIM you pay Three between €84.12 and €104.12 a year more for the same masts, and on Super Surfer you get fewer minutes for it.
48 is not always the answer. Stick with Three direct when:
- You want a phone on a bill-pay plan. 48 does not sell handsets on contract.
- You want more than 20 GB in the EU. Freedom and Flex give 60 GB; Connect Complete prepay gives 37 GB.
- You want an eSIM. Three offers one on prepay and bill pay; 48 posts plastic.
- You want a shop to walk into, or Three+ presales.
- You are already on a Three phone contract and it has months to run. Wait it out, then port.
