The short version: speed-test with a cable into the router. Fast wired + dead bedroom = Wi-Fi. Slow wired = stop and read slow broadband — mesh cannot repair copper, a busy cable node or a 5G cell. Do not upgrade to 1 Gb to cover a wall. Household speed is a different question: what speed do I need?
When the line is fine and Wi-Fi is the problem
The retailer owes you a working service to the router (or ONT). They do not owe you 5 GHz through two masonry walls and a water tank. If a laptop on Ethernet hits the typical speed for the plan, ComReg-style speed complaints are the wrong tool. The bedroom is a coverage job.
Clues it is Wi-Fi, not the ISP:
- Wired test is in the typical band; the same laptop collapses two rooms away.
- The room next to the hub is fine; the box room, extension or garden office is not.
- One smart TV on 2.4 GHz buffers while a wired PC downloads cleanly.
- Things improve when you stand in the hall and die when you close the upstairs door.
Clues it is not Wi-Fi: Ethernet is slow at every hour, or it only dies after 8pm on cable, 5G or Starlink. That path is not getting advertised speed.
What Irish houses do to radio
A lot of the stock that actually has fibre or Virgin is still hostile to Wi-Fi:
- Thick external walls — block, stone, older solid construction. 5 GHz stops; 2.4 GHz limps.
- Two-storey with a concrete or dense timber floor — a downstairs hub does not “just cover” bedrooms.
- Foil insulation and metal studs — a Faraday-ish surprise in otherwise modern builds.
- The engineer’s corner — ONT and router land where the drop entered, often a utility, garage or understairs cupboard. Convenient for glass. Terrible for radio.
- Neighbours — dense 2.4 GHz in terraces and apartments. Your SSID is not the only one in that channel.
None of that is a reason to take Starlink, and none of it is a reason to pay for 2 Gb. The air inside the house does not care which logo is on the bill.
How to check before you spend
- Ethernet first. If the line is weak, fix that. Do not buy nodes on top of FTTC or a congested cell.
- Wi-Fi at one metre, then in the dead room. Same device, 5 GHz if it has it. Write both numbers down.
- Move the hub into the open — even temporarily on a long Ethernet from the ONT. Re-test. Free, and it surprises people.
- Forget the old extender if you already have one with a second network name. Unplug it for the test; they often make roaming worse.
- Then choose: a better location, a cable to the TV/desk, or mesh. Not a new 24-month broadband deal.
The provider router is often the weak radio
The hub Sky, Eir, Virgin, Vodafone or Pure post you is built to terminate the WAN and get you online, not to light a farmhouse. It may be years old, in a cupboard, with extenders daisy-chained since 2019. A newer ISP booster can help. It is still one vendor’s idea of “good enough”. Third-party mesh (with the ISP router left as modem, or as the first hop) is the usual adult step when the house is the problem.
If you put their kit in bridge/modem mode, you may lose some of their app features and they may blame “your equipment” on a Wi-Fi ticket. Fair enough — you took coverage in-house. Keep Ethernet evidence of the line so a real WAN fault is still their job.

A fourth option sits outside the table: run Ethernet to the TV, the desk, or the upstairs node. Ugly for a day, then the fastest “Wi-Fi fix” you will ever buy. Powerline adapters are the unlisted gamble — old Irish rings often ruin them.
How many nodes? Two covers most semis (main + upstairs). Add a third for a long bungalow, a converted garage or a remaining dead room. More wireless nodes in a small terrace can fight each other. Place them in the open, mid-way to the dead zone — not in the dead zone already on one bar, and not in a second cupboard.
Don’t buy a new ISP for a dead bedroom
Switching is the right move when the technology is wrong: Part Fibre copper when FTTH has arrived, 5G when NBI is Passed, Virgin evenings when SIRO is on the pole. It is the wrong move when Ethernet already shows a healthy 500 Mb and the landing does not.

If you do switch later for price or fibre, take the mesh with you. It will still be the right radio for the house. The new retailer’s free hub can sit in a cupboard as a modem. That is the honest split: they sell the line; you cover the bedrooms.
