Why is my broadband slow?

As of August 2026, most “slow fibre” tickets in Irish houses are Wi-Fi, the wrong product (Part Fibre copper sold as fibre), or a shared network at peak time — cable, 5G or Starlink after tea. A wired speed test is the fork in the road. Do not buy a new ISP for a dead bedroom, and do not buy mesh for a noisy copper pair.

The short version: plug a laptop into the router. If that test is fast and the upstairs phone is not, you have a coverage problem — Wi-Fi dead zones. If the cable is slow too, you have a line, a plan, or a technology that cannot do what the ad implied — not getting advertised speed.

We do not invent lab Mbps. Figures below are typical advertised plans and consumer planning ranges, not a matched.ie test bench.

Wi-Fi vs the line — start here

The router in the understairs press can deliver 500 Mb on the WAN port and 40 Mb on the landing. Those are different faults. Retailers, ComReg complaints and early-termination arguments all care about the wired result. Your Netflix in the back bedroom cares about Wi-Fi.

Irish houses make this worse: thick block and stone, two storeys, foil-backed plasterboard, a router dumped where the engineer could reach the ONT. None of that is an Open Eir outage. Switching Sky to Vodafone on the same full-fibre socket will not punch radio through a chimney breast.

How to test, in order

  1. Speed-test on Ethernet, not Wi-Fi. Laptop into the router’s LAN (or the ONT via the router). Close other devices, VPN off. Note download, upload, ping, time and “wired”.
  2. Repeat on Wi-Fi in the room that feels slow. Same machine if you can. A large wired-to-wireless gap is the house. A slow wired result is the service.
  3. Do 10am and after 8pm. Cable, 5G and Starlink often sag at peak. FTTH should not fall off a cliff. Two times of day beat one screenshot.
  4. Read the order. FTTH, Part Fibre (FTTC), Virgin cable, 5G or satellite — plus the advertised down/up. Labels: FTTH vs FTTC vs cable.
  5. Then pick a fix. Mesh, a fault ticket, or a real network change. See switch vs mesh vs call the ISP.

Use a laptop with a gigabit Ethernet port if you are on 500 Mb or 1 Gb. A 100 Mb NIC, a phone, or a test through a travel VPN will lie.

Peak-time cable contention

Virgin’s hybrid fibre-coax is fibre in the street and coaxial cable into the house. The last stretch is shared with the neighbours. Daytime a 1 Gb plan can look like the ad. After tea the node fills up and download sags. That is contention, not you “using it wrong”.

Upload is a separate honesty check. August 2026 plans we track: Virgin 500 Mb and 1 Gb advertised at 50 Mb up; 2 Gb at 100 Mb. If video calls pixelate while the download test still looks decent, you may be hitting the upload cap, not a mysterious slowdown. Full fibre (especially SIRO/NBI symmetry) is the usual fix where it passes — not a different Virgin speed tier.

A week of wired tests at 10am and 9pm is what you take to a ticket. One Friday-night phone screenshot is what they bounce. If the evening floor is below the minimum in the contract, that becomes an advertised-speed complaint — not getting advertised speed.

FTTC copper is not “slow full fibre”

Fibre to the cabinet is glass to the green box and the old phone pair into the house. ComReg calls it Part Fibre. Typical Irish last-mile is around 100 Mb down with a thin upload. Retailers still sell it, because a lot of doors are not on FTTH yet. That is legitimate broadband. It is not the 500 Mb TV ad.

If the wired test is 70–100 Mb on an FTTC order, the line is often doing its job. Shopping a new logo on the same Open Eir cabinet will not magic a gigabit. 5G cell congestion

5G home is a mast and a radio. Advertised 300–500 Mb is a ceiling. After tea the cell is a shared pipe: every house on that sector streaming, every phone on the same carrier. Indoor Irish walls eat 3.6 GHz. A hub in a press at the back of a bungalow will look like “slow broadband” even when the mast is fine.

Put the hub in a window that faces the mast, retest wired (yes — Ethernet out of the 5G router) at two times of day, and treat large evening drops as the product. Use 5G as a bridge or a no-engineer option, not as a way to beat SIRO on a SIRO street. Three 5G home and Imagine are the names people actually buy; the rural shortlist is on best rural broadband.

Low-earth-orbit satellite is nationwide if the dish sees the sky. It is still a shared cell in space. Residential Ireland plans we list (100 / 200 / 400 Mb) often sit in the 100–200 Mb band on a busy evening. Latency is typically tens of milliseconds — not 2000s VSAT — but it will not match FTTH for upload or consistency.

Obstructions (trees, gables), weather and a dirty dish make it worse. None of that is a reason to keep Starlink once NBI or other fibre is live and cheaper. Rolling monthly is the point: cancel when the ONT is booked. Detail: Starlink review.

Why is my broadband slow in Ireland even though I pay for fibre?+

Three usual answers: you are measuring Wi-Fi, not the line; the product is FTTC “Part Fibre” sold as fibre; or you are on cable, 5G or Starlink at peak time. Run a wired test first. If Ethernet is fine and the bedroom is not, that is Wi-Fi dead zones, not a new ISP.

Should I speed-test on Wi-Fi or Ethernet?+

Ethernet (a cable into the router) is the only test the retailer has to care about. Wi-Fi adds walls, neighbours, the microwave and a 2018 laptop radio. A phone on 2.4 GHz in the attic is not evidence that Open Eir is slow. Test wired, then test Wi-Fi in the room that actually feels slow, and keep both numbers.

Why is Virgin Media slower in the evening?+

Cable is a shared last stretch. Neighbours streaming after tea contend for the same segment. Daytime 800 Mb and evening 200 Mb on a “1 Gb” plan is the classic HFC complaint — not proof the modem is broken. Upload on Virgin 500/1 Gb plans is advertised at 50 Mb either way. Is Open Eir FTTC supposed to be this slow?+

Typical last-mile copper is around 100 Mb down, not 500. ComReg labels it Part Fibre. Distance from the cabinet, the quality of the pair and old internal wiring all cap it. Why does 5G home broadband crawl after tea?+

The cell is shared. Advertised “up to 500 Mb” is a ceiling, not a evening floor. Indoor walls, a downstairs window facing the wrong way, and every house on the mast watching Netflix all cut throughput. Move the hub to a window, re-test at 10am vs 9pm, then decide if a wired network has arrived. Rural bridge options: best rural broadband.

Does Starlink slow down in the evening in Ireland?+

Often, yes. Residential plans we track are advertised 100 / 200 / 400 Mb; busy evenings commonly sit in the 100–200 Mb band as the satellite cell fills up. Trees, gables and rain fade add more. Will switching provider fix slow broadband?+

Only if you change the network or you were on a broken line the old retailer would not fix. Sky → Vodafone on the same Open Eir FTTH socket is a new contract and router, not new physics. When should I call the ISP instead of buying a mesh?+

When the wired test is well below the typical or minimum speed in the contract — at more than one time of day — and you have already rebooted the router, tried another Ethernet cable, and confirmed you are on the product you think you are. Mesh cannot repair a noisy copper pair, a congested cable node, or a 5G cell that has run out of airtime.

Can a VPN make broadband feel slow?+

Yes. A VPN adds a detour. Turn it off for the diagnostic test. If the line is fine without it and awful with it, that is the VPN path, not Open Eir. Do not send the ISP a speedtest taken through a VPN and expect a line engineer.

How fast should 500 Mb fibre actually feel?+

On a healthy FTTH line, a wired test should land close to the advertised download — not 80 Mb. Upload depends on the retailer (Sky 500 is typically 100 up; SIRO/NBI often 500/500). Is slow Wi-Fi a reason to upgrade from 500 Mb to 1 Gb?+

Usually no. A gigabit plan feeding the same stone wall still tests at 80 Mb in the back bedroom. Fix coverage first — Wi-Fi dead zones. Take 1 Gb when the wired test already saturates 500 and the extra gig is cheap (Vodafone and Virgin often price them the same).

What if the router lights are fine but everything still buffers?+

Lights mean power and a sync, not throughput. Buffering on one smart TV with a strong wired test is often the TV’s Wi-Fi, a 2.4 GHz stick, or a 4K stream fighting a dozen phones. Buffering on every device including a wired laptop is the line or the plan. Split those two before you ring anyone.
