- ✓Most Indian streaming services — JioHotstar, SonyLIV, Sun NXT, Aha, Hoichoi — are geo-locked to India; a VPN with an India server unlocks them.
- ✓ZEE5 is the exception: it has a global version (ZEE5 Global) you can subscribe to in Ireland with no VPN at all.
- ✓A VPN set to India also switches Netflix and Prime Video to their much larger Indian libraries.
- ✓Regional languages are well served: Aha (Telugu), Sun NXT (Tamil and the south), Hoichoi (Bengali), Chaupal (Punjabi).
- ✓India servers are virtual post-2022 — standard, and they stream the same. You still need a legitimate subscription.
The quick answer
Nearly all of India’s streaming — JioHotstar, SonyLIV, Sun NXT, Aha, Hoichoi — is geo-locked to India, so from Ireland you connect a VPN to an India server for an Indian IP and open the service you’ve subscribed to. The big exception is ZEE5, which sells an international version you can use here without a VPN. And a neat bonus: an India IP also switches your Netflix and Prime Video to their much bigger Indian libraries.
ZEE5 Global needs no VPN · everything else Indian needs an India server · and that same server unlocks India’s Netflix.
The main Indian streaming services
Here’s the lay of the land, and whether each needs a VPN from Ireland:
- JioHotstar — VPN to India. The giant: Hindi and regional film, drama, Star network shows and live cricket. Paid, and locked to India.
- ZEE5 — no VPN needed. Uniquely, ZEE5 sells a global subscription, so you can watch it in Ireland directly. A VPN only matters if you specifically want the India catalogue or India pricing.
- SonyLIV — VPN to India. Sony’s channels and originals, plus some sport. Geo-locked to India.
- JioCinema — now part of JioHotstar. The old JioCinema has merged into JioHotstar, so that’s where its content now lives.
- MX Player, Voot / others — VPN to India. Free, ad-supported catalogues in India, blocked from Ireland without an Indian IP.
Regional languages, properly covered
India is not one audience, and the streaming map reflects that — this is where an India IP really earns its keep, because the regional services rarely sell abroad at all. With a VPN set to India you can reach:
- Aha — the leading Telugu (and now Tamil) platform, big with the south Indian community.
- Sun NXT — Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam film and TV from the Sun network.
- Hoichoi — the home of Bengali film and web series.
- Chaupal — Punjabi, Haryanvi and Bhojpuri content, relevant to a big slice of the Irish-Indian community.
A VPN unlocks India’s Netflix and Prime too
This is the part people often miss. You almost certainly already pay for Netflix or Prime Video — and both carry a far larger catalogue of Indian films and shows in India than they offer in Ireland. Because you already have the subscription, an India server is all you need: connect, and your existing account simply switches to the Indian library, no second payment involved. It’s the cleanest use of a VPN there is — your own account, a different regional catalogue. Our change your Netflix region guide walks through it.
The honest bit
We’ll keep it straight. A VPN gives you an Indian IP so you can reach a service you’ve signed up for — a JioHotstar plan, a ZEE5 account, your own Netflix. It doesn’t hand you anything you haven’t paid for, and it never justifies a pirate “Indian channels” box or an unlicensed IPTV subscription — those are exactly what we steer people away from. Note too that reaching a geo-locked service from Ireland is against that platform’s terms of use: a contractual matter between you and the service, not a criminal one, with no history of viewers being pursued.
How to watch, step by step
Start to finish is about four minutes:
- 1Set up your streaming account
While you’re on your normal Irish connection, sign in to (or create) an account for the service you want — JioHotstar, SonyLIV, Sun NXT, Aha and so on. Some sign-ups expect an Indian mobile number or an Indian payment method.
- 2Get a VPN with an India server
You need a provider that offers an Indian IP. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and CyberGhost all do. Since 2022 these are virtual India servers — physically in Singapore or the UK, but they hand you an Indian IP and stream the same.
- 3Connect to India
Open the VPN app, sign in and connect to the India location. Your device now looks Indian to any service you open, from JioHotstar to the Indian catalogue of Netflix.
- 4Open the app and play
Launch the streaming app or site, sign in, and press play. If a title won’t load, disconnect, switch to another India server, reconnect and try again.
Which VPNs work
The job is a reliable India server with the speed for HD, and consistent unblocking of the big Indian apps. From our testing, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and CyberGhost all handle it. Our top three:
