The UK telly you’re missing in Ireland
Three broadcasters carry the bulk of free British television, and from Ireland all three are shut to you for the same reason — but they are not all the same to watch once you are in:

Channel 4 — the streaming service formerly called All 4 — is the home of British comedy and alternative telly, the shows everyone is quoting on Monday morning: The Great British Bake Off, Gogglebox, Taskmaster, the Film4 library, the cutting-edge documentaries and Channel 4 News. Like ITVX it is free, ad-funded and needs no TV Licence — just a free Channel 4 account with a UK postcode (an optional ad-free tier exists, but most people use the free one) — and its detection is moderate, closer to ITVX than to iPlayer’s arms race.

How to watch any UK channel in Ireland
The setup is the same for all three players and takes about five minutes. Two separate jobs: the VPN handles your location (the UK IP), and a free account handles your login — each service needs one. The universal sequence:
- Install the VPN on the device you will watch on — phone, tablet, laptop or streaming stick.
- Connect to a UK (London or Manchester) server first and wait for it to confirm. Doing this before you open the player means the first thing it sees is a British IP.
- Open the player — BBC iPlayer, ITVX or Channel 4 — as an app or in a browser.
- Sign in. Each needs its own free account with a UK postcode: a free BBC account for iPlayer, a free ITV account for ITVX, a free Channel 4 account for Channel 4. You can register from Ireland once the VPN shows a UK IP.

If a stream is blocked or stuck — most often on iPlayer, given its detection — the fixes are quick and almost always work:

Watching Wimbledon or a Bake Off final on a phone is a poor substitute for the big screen. All three broadcasters have TV apps — and how you run the VPN depends on the device:

Quick rule: if your telly is a Fire TV, Android TV or Apple TV, install the VPN app straight onto it. If it is a Samsung or LG smart TV, it cannot run a VPN — use your router, Smart DNS (not on Proton VPN), or simply cast from your phone.
Is it legal?
The honest answer needs a little nuance, because the three are not on the same footing. Start with the constant: using a VPN is completely legal in Ireland — millions of people run one every day for banking, work and privacy, and nothing about it is against the law.
