NightSaver vs smart time-of-use: same clock, different game

A NightSaver meter and a smart time-of-use tariff both charge less at night — which is exactly why people confuse them, sign the wrong thing, and end up cooking dinner at 54c a unit. Here is the real difference: the meter configuration codes behind each, why a smart meter on your wall does not mean you are on a smart tariff, and the one warning that matters before you switch — the smart move is typically one-way.

Thirty-second version: NightSaver (meter configuration MCC02) is two prices — cheap night 23:00–08:00, dear day 08:00–23:00, and no evening peak. A smart time-of-use plan (MCC16, or MCC12 half-hourly) usually adds a third, dearest price from 17:00 to 19:00 — 45c to 57c on the cards we verified on 28 August 2026. A smart meter does not put you on a smart tariff: the meter can stay configured as MCC02 until you sign otherwise. And once you do sign a smart tariff, the move to MCC12/MCC16 is typically one-way.

What are the two things people mix up?

The words do a lot of damage here. “Night meter”, “day/night meter”, “NightSaver”, “smart meter”, “smart plan”, “time-of-use” — Irish suppliers and neighbours use all six interchangeably, and they describe two genuinely different systems that happen to share one idea: electricity is cheaper when the country is asleep.

NightSaver is the legacy system. It has existed for decades, it was built for storage heaters and immersion timers, and it lives on a meter with two registers. Smart time-of-use is the new system, built on the national smart-meter rollout, and it lets suppliers carve the day into as many price bands as their marketing department likes — including a premium band in the early evening that NightSaver never had. Which one you are on is not a matter of opinion or app settings: it is a Meter Configuration Code (MCC) held against your MPRN by ESB Networks, and every tariff you are allowed to sign must match it. What exactly is NightSaver (MCC02)?

MCC02 is the day/night configuration. Every unit you use between 23:00 and 08:00 lands on the night register at a cheap rate; every unit between 08:00 and 23:00 lands on the day register at a dear one. That is the whole system — two prices, fixed hours, all year round.

Three things follow from that simplicity. First, there is no peak band: cooking at 18:00 costs exactly what hoovering at 10:00 costs. Second, the day rate is dearer and the standing charge is usually higher than on a 24-hour plan, so NightSaver only pays once enough of your load genuinely runs after 23:00 — our NightSaver ranking computes the break-even night share per supplier, and it runs from roughly 12% to 76% depending on whose deal you take. Third, MCC02 tariffs still exist and are still sold: on the cards we verified on 28 August 2026, SSE Airtricity’s year-1 NightSaver rates were 29.17c day / 18.66c night and Electric Ireland’s were 34.12c day / 16.83c night.

What is a smart time-of-use tariff (MCC16 and MCC12)?

A smart tariff needs a smart meter and one of two smart configurations. MCC16 maps your usage into three fixed bands: day, night, and a peak from 17:00 to 19:00 — the two hours when national demand spikes and, not coincidentally, when most families cook. MCC12 goes further: the meter exports a reading every half hour, which lets a supplier price any window it wants — a 02:00–06:00 EV band at 8.59c (Yuno) or 9.42c (Energia), weekend rates, or fully dynamic wholesale-linked pricing. If a plan advertises an EV window or dynamic rates, it almost always needs MCC12 with half-hourly data enabled.

The shape is the point. Smart plans reward you for moving load into the small hours and punish you for using it at teatime. On the standard cards we verified, smart day rates ran 40c–44c — dearer than either NightSaver day rate above — and peaks ran 45.38c to 56.76c. The cheap night and EV windows are real, but they are paid for by the rest of the clock.

What do the two clocks look like side by side?

Same 24 hours, different carve-up. Green is the cheap night band, rust is day, and the dark block is the smart peak — the band MCC02 simply does not have.

Does a smart meter mean I am on a smart tariff?

No — and this is the myth this page exists to kill. ESB Networks has been replacing old meters with smart meters across the country regardless of what tariff anyone is on. The install changes the hardware; it does not change your contract, your rates, or your meter configuration. A home that had a NightSaver meter gets a smart meter that is simply configured as MCC02 — same 23:00–08:00 night window, same day/night rates, same bill. A 24-hour home stays 24-hour. Nothing about your pricing moves until you sign a smart tariff with a supplier.

The mix-up costs money in both directions. Some households believe the new meter has already put them on “smart rates” and start running the dishwasher at 2am for a discount they are not actually getting. Others refuse the meter upgrade for fear of losing NightSaver — needlessly, since the configuration survives the swap. The box on the wall is just a box. The tariff is a signature, and the signature is the thing to think hard about — because of what comes next.

Why is moving to a smart tariff one-way?

Say it loudly: the move to a smart tariff is typically one-way. The first time you sign a smart time-of-use, EV or dynamic plan, your meter configuration is changed to MCC12 or MCC16 — and ESB Networks treats that as permanent. You cannot later ask to be put back onto MCC02 NightSaver, or onto a plain 24-hour MCC01. Whatever supplier you use for the rest of your time in that house, you will be choosing from smart-configuration tariffs.

What you keep: the freedom to switch suppliers, and to move between smart plans — including flat-rate smart plans with no peak band at all. What you lose: the legacy day/night shape, and the option of ever comparing it against smart from the inside. Decide with a full year of your usage in mind, not one cheap window.

This is why “sure, try it for a month” is bad advice on smart tariffs specifically. Trying a new supplier is reversible — switching takes 2–4 weeks and works in any direction. Trying a new meter configuration is not. If your NightSaver arithmetic works today, the burden of proof is on the smart plan to beat it across the whole clock, not just the hours its ad mentions.

What do the two rate shapes actually charge?

Here are both shapes on real cards — NightSaver day/night rates against smart day/night/peak, cent per kWh including 9% VAT, urban, each read on the supplier’s own site on 28 August 2026. They are not all like-for-like commercially (two are discounted year-1 cards, two are undiscounted standard cards — the note says which), but the shape comparison is the honest one: look at where each plan is cheap and where it is dear.

Two patterns jump out. The night rates are not far apart — 16.83c–18.66c on discounted NightSaver, 21.46c–21.60c on the sharper smart cards — so “cheap nights” alone is no reason to move. The day and peak rates are worlds apart: NightSaver daytime at 29c–34c versus smart daytime at 40c–44c and smart peaks at 45c–57c. A smart plan earns its keep only through the windows NightSaver cannot offer — Yuno’s 8.59c and Energia’s 9.42c EV bands at 02:00–06:00 — or through year-1 discounts on the smart card itself. Not every smart plan even has a peak: SSE’s Smart EV Max and Bord Gáis’s Smart All Day use flat or two-band structures, which matters for evening-heavy homes forced onto smart configurations.

Two households, priced through both shapes

Take the CRU typical 4,200 kWh a year and split it two ways. A night-heavy home — storage heating, immersion on a timer, an EV charging after 23:00 — running 55% night, 40% day and 5% in the 17:00–19:00 band. And an evening family — everyone home at six, dinner on the hob, wash cycles after work — running 25% night, 55% day and a realistic 20% in that two-hour window. Price both through SSE’s year-1 NightSaver card and Yuno’s EV Variable Smart card (unit costs only; standing charges and PSO sit on top and differ by plan):

Annual unit cost at 4,200 kWh, rates as in the table above (verified 28 Aug 2026). On MCC02 the 17:00–19:00 units simply price as day — that is the whole advantage. The SSE card is a discounted year-1 offer; the Yuno card is the standard card its discounts lapse onto, so treat the gap as illustrative of shape, not a supplier verdict.

The evening family is the story. Their 840 kWh of teatime cooking and washing costs €245 a year priced as NightSaver day units (29.17c) — and €381 on Yuno’s 45.38c peak, €455 on Bord Gáis’s undiscounted 54.11c, or €477 on Energia’s 56.76c standard card. The peak band alone can move a family bill by €130–€230 a year before anything else changes. Meanwhile the night-heavy home does fine on either shape — and would do better still than either bar if that night load is an EV that can squeeze into a 02:00–06:00 window at 8.59c–9.42c, which no MCC02 plan can offer. So who should pick which?

Stay on (or seek out) NightSaver — MCC02 — if:

  • Your big loads are overnight and dumb: storage heaters, an immersion on a timer, appliances you happily delay past 23:00. The 9-hour window is generous and the day rate is far kinder than smart day rates.
  • You are an evening-heavy family that happens to have a night meter: you get cheap nights without a 45c–57c dinner penalty. For you, MCC02 is quietly the best shape on the market — keep it.
  • You value reversibility: MCC02 homes can still shop both worlds. Once you go smart you cannot come back and compare.
  • You charge an EV overnight but cannot avoid heavy 17:00–19:00 use — the peak can eat the window saving. Our NightSaver ranking shows who sells the best MCC02 cards.

Make the one-way smart move — MCC12/MCC16 — if:

  • An EV is your dominant load and it can charge inside a dedicated window: 8.59c–13.86c EV rates beat any legacy night rate by a distance.
  • Your household can genuinely clear the 17:00–19:00 band — timers on the washing, dinner off-peak or on gas, nobody home at six.
  • You want dynamic or flat smart pricing, solar-export-friendly plans, or the discounted year-1 smart cards — none of which exist on MCC02.
  • You accept the door closing: from then on you compare smart plans against smart plans, using the main ranking and the cheapest electricity table as your map.

What if I am not sure? Stay on 24-hour

If you do not know your usage shape — and most households honestly do not — the right answer is usually neither of these. A plain 24-hour plan (or a flat-rate smart plan, if your configuration has already moved) has one price all day, no window to game and no peak to dodge, and the cheapest 24-hour year-1 deals in our ranking undercut most time-of-use arithmetic for ordinary usage patterns anyway.

Then measure before you commit. On an MCC02 meter, read both registers tonight and again in a week: night units divided by total units is your night share, and the break-even table on the NightSaver page tells you instantly whether the day/night shape pays with your supplier. On a smart meter still in its legacy configuration, your supplier’s app or the ESB Networks data portal can show usage by time of day. A week of real numbers beats any assumption — especially in front of a one-way door. What is the difference between a NightSaver meter and a smart tariff?+

A NightSaver meter is hardware plus a configuration: meter configuration MCC02, which splits every day into a cheap night register (23:00–08:00) and a dearer day register (08:00–23:00). A smart tariff is a price plan that needs a smart meter reconfigured as MCC16 (day, night and a 17:00–19:00 peak band) or MCC12 (half-hourly readings, used for EV windows and dynamic pricing). NightSaver has two prices and no evening peak; most smart time-of-use plans have three or more prices, including a peak of 45c to 57c on the cards we verified in August 2026.

Is a smart meter the same as a smart tariff?+

No — this is the single most common mix-up in Irish energy. The smart meter is the box ESB Networks installs; the smart tariff is a contract you have to actively sign with a supplier. Until you sign one, the new meter simply carries on in your old configuration — 24-hour, or MCC02 day/night if you had a NightSaver meter — and you keep paying your existing rates. Roughly speaking: ESB Networks changes the meter, only you can change the tariff.

Can I go back to NightSaver after moving to a smart tariff?+

Typically no. When you sign a smart time-of-use, EV or dynamic plan, your meter configuration is changed to MCC12 or MCC16, and ESB Networks treats that move as one-way — you cannot ask to be put back onto MCC02 (or a 24-hour MCC01) later. You can still switch suppliers and switch between smart plans as often as you like, but the legacy NightSaver configuration itself is a door that closes behind you.

What are the peak hours on smart electricity plans in Ireland?+

The standard smart time-of-use peak band is 17:00 to 19:00 — exactly when most families cook dinner. On the rate cards we verified on 28 August 2026, peak rates ran from 45.38c/kWh (Yuno EV Variable Smart) through 46.81c (Prepay Power) to 54.11c (Bord Gáis undiscounted, Mon–Fri) and 56.76c (Energia’s standard EV smart card). Not every smart plan has one: SSE’s Smart EV Max and Bord Gáis’s Smart All Day use flat or two-band structures with no peak premium.

What does MCC02 mean on my electricity bill?+

MCC stands for Meter Configuration Code — ESB Networks’ label for how your meter records usage. MCC02 is the day/night configuration behind NightSaver tariffs: one register for 08:00–23:00, another for 23:00–08:00. MCC01 is a standard 24-hour meter, MCC12 is a smart meter exporting half-hourly readings, and MCC16 is a smart meter mapped into day, night and peak bands. Suppliers can only sell you tariffs that match your code, which is why the code — not the shiny meter on the wall — decides what you can actually sign up to.

The trade is that the move is one-way and the whole house inherits the smart card, including a 45c-plus peak at dinner time.
