The short version: NightSaver is meter configuration MCC02 — ESB Networks’ day/night setup. Night rate 23:00–08:00, day rate 08:00–23:00, recorded on two separate registers. The night units are cheap; in exchange you pay a higher standing charge (€338.98 vs €263.86 a year at SSE, urban) and a day rate that can reach 44–47c at suppliers that don’t discount day/night plans. It pays only if enough of your usage genuinely runs after 23:00.

What is a NightSaver meter?
NightSaver is Ireland’s legacy two-rate electricity setup — what other countries call an “economy” or day/night meter. Technically it is a meter configuration, not a tariff: ESB Networks, who own and run every electricity meter in the state, configure the meter as MCC02, and it then records your usage in two separate totals — one for units used at night, one for units used by day. Your supplier prices each total separately on the bill: a night unit rate, a day unit rate, and a (higher) standing charge for the privilege of the arrangement.
The configuration was built for a particular kind of household: storage heaters that charge overnight and release heat through the day, immersion tanks heating water on a timer, farms and homes with heavy overnight loads — and more recently, EVs charging while the house sleeps. For those homes, shifting the big loads into the cheap window beats any single-rate plan. The meter does not care what you run at night, only when — every unit that passes through it between 23:00 and 08:00 lands on the cheap register.
Because it is a configuration and not a contract, NightSaver survives a supplier switch untouched. You can move between any suppliers that publish day/night rates — seven of the nine we track did when we checked in August 2026 — and the meter, the windows and the two registers stay exactly as they were. Only the prices change.
When does the night rate actually start and end?
The window is fixed by ESB Networks’ MCC02 configuration, the same for every supplier and every day of the week, weekends and bank holidays included:
The MCC02 day: green is the cheap night register (23:00–08:00), rust is the dear day register (08:00–23:00). Nine cheap hours, fifteen dear ones.
23:00 means 23:00. The single most expensive habit on a NightSaver meter is treating the evening as “night”. A dishwasher started at 20:00, a dryer at 21:30, the washing machine as you head to bed at 22:40 — all of it bills at the day rate, which on a NightSaver plan is dearer than a normal 24-hour rate. Use the delay-start button: set machines to begin after 23:00, not to finish before midnight. One more wrinkle: supplier tariff sheets show the window shifting with the clocks — Electric Ireland and SSE both print 00:00–09:00 for summertime — so re-check appliance and immersion timers every March and October.
Notice the arithmetic the strip makes visible: only nine of the twenty-four hours are cheap, and they are the nine when most households use least. That is the whole design — and the whole risk. The meter rewards a house that can genuinely move its heavy loads into that green band, and penalises one that merely means to.
Which of the two registers is day, and which is night?
A NightSaver meter keeps two running totals. On an older electromechanical or digital day/night meter you will see two numbered readings; on a smart meter configured as MCC02, the display cycles through the registers automatically. Suppliers ask for both when you submit a reading, usually labelled day and night — and your bill shows two separate unit lines priced at the two rates.
If the meter’s own labels leave you guessing which total is which, use the only test that cannot lie: read both registers at around 22:00, then again after 08:00 the next morning. The register that moved overnight is the night register. Two quick paperwork notes. Your bill confirms the configuration in writing — look for MCC02 on the meter details. And your MPRN, the 11-digit number identifying the connection, is the same whatever the configuration; NightSaver changes how usage is recorded, not who you are on the network.
What does NightSaver cost you in exchange for the cheap nights?
Nobody hands out cheap electricity for free. The night rate is structurally bought, twice over — and both purchase prices sit in plain sight on the tariff sheet:

All figures inc VAT, verified 28 August 2026; standing charges are urban (DG1) — rural (DG2) day/night charges run higher again, up to €422.31 at Energia. The standing-charge premium exists because a day/night meter carries higher network charges, passed straight through; the standing charges guide has the full table. The day-rate premium is the subtler cost, and it varies wildly by supplier. Where the new-customer discount applies to the day/night plan (SSE, Electric Ireland), the day rate stays civilised. Where it does not, the day rate is the standard undiscounted one — which is how Flogas’s day/night plan charges 44.00c per daytime unit while its discounted 24-hour plan charges 31.68c. Same supplier, same hour of the day, 12c apart. Here is that shape drawn out for two suppliers:

When does NightSaver lose to a plain 24-hour plan?
Whenever your night share is too small to earn back the two premiums. The logic is mechanical: every night unit saves you the gap between day-ish and night rates, but the higher standing charge and dearer day units cost you money before the saving starts. Divide one by the other and each supplier has a break-even night share — the percentage of your total units that must run 23:00–08:00 before its day/night plan beats its own 24-hour deal.
On the plans we verified in August 2026 that break-even ranges from roughly 12% of units at Community Power and about 21% at SSE, up to roughly 61% at Flogas and 76% at Energia — the last two because their new-customer discounts apply to 24-hour plans only, leaving their day/night rates undiscounted. Almost no household puts three-quarters of its electricity through the night registers. What should you do with that? One thing only: measure before believing. Read both registers a week apart; night growth divided by total growth is your night share. Storage-heated homes commonly clear 40% in winter and sail past every break-even. A gas-heated house that just runs the dishwasher late might manage 15–20% and lose money on most suppliers’ day/night plans. And if you have drifted past month 12 on a lapsed discount, the day rate you are actually paying is worse again — the year-2 cliff applies to NightSaver plans exactly as it does to everything else.
When does a smart time-of-use tariff beat NightSaver?
Broadly: when your cheap load is narrow and schedulable — above all an EV, which can charge inside a dedicated smart EV window priced far below any NightSaver night rate — and when the household can stay off the 17:00–19:00 evening peak that most smart plans price at their dearest. NightSaver holds its ground where the overnight load is big and the daytime pattern ordinary, because its day rate, unlovely as it is, never spikes at dinner time.

Will I lose NightSaver when the smart meter arrives?
No — and this reassurance matters, because the national rollout is replacing old day/night meters as it goes. When ESB Networks exchanges your two-register meter for a smart one, the new meter is simply configured as MCC02: same 23:00–08:00 window, same two registers (now recorded electronically), same rates, same plan. Nothing about your bill changes until you yourself sign a different tariff. When we checked esbnetworks.ie on 28 August 2026, the network company was explicit on both points: the meter upgrade carries no additional charge, and your tariff does not change with the installation.
The reverse assumption is the trap: a smart meter on the wall does not mean smart rates on the bill. Plenty of MCC02 homes have carried a smart meter for years while their billing carries on exactly as before — which is the correct outcome if NightSaver suits them, and a missed decision if it doesn’t. What the new hardware does change is convenience (remote reads instead of squinting at registers) and options: it makes a future move to a smart tariff possible without another meter visit. How do I get NightSaver installed — or removed?
Both directions run through the same two parties: your supplier owns the tariff, ESB Networks owns the meter. You never book ESB Networks directly for this — the supplier raises the request and the network company does the physical or configuration work. The exchange itself:
- Measure first. A week of register readings (or a hard look at what could genuinely run after 23:00) tells you whether MCC02 pays for your house. Below your supplier’s break-even share, don’t install it; above it, don’t remove it.
- Ask your supplier for a day/night tariff (to install) or a 24-hour tariff (to remove). They confirm eligibility and arrange the meter exchange or reconfiguration with ESB Networks.
- Ask about charges before booking. The smart-meter upgrade itself carries no additional charge, but a requested change is a different thing — confirm with your supplier whether anything applies to your exchange, in either direction, before you commit.
- Expect the standing charge to move with the configuration — up onto the day/night charge when NightSaver is added, back down when it goes. New installs today will typically be a smart meter set to MCC02, not a legacy two-register box.
- Set the timers the day it goes live. Immersion, storage heaters, delay-start appliances — all aligned to 23:00, and re-checked when the clocks change.
One asymmetry to hold onto: MCC02 to MCC01 (and back) is an ordinary request, but MCC02 to a smart configuration (MCC12/MCC16) is treated as one-way. If there is any chance NightSaver still suits you, decide that before signing a smart tariff, not after.
