Does 5G matter for a phone plan?

It matters if you are on the tap, hotspot, or a busy commuter mast, and if 5G actually reaches the room. It does not matter if you live on Wi-Fi and a 4G SIM already holds calls. We do not invent speed-test Mbps. A 5G plan on a 4G-only mast is still 4G.

For most people the €12.99 unlimited 5G SIMs are cheap enough that you take 5G when the host has it, then stop thinking about it. Network first: best mobile network in Ireland.

A 5G logo on the brand tile does not mean every row is 5G. These are the 4G plans we list in August 2026.

• 48 Student 100 GB. €10.99, college email, 4G. The unlimited 48 plan is the 5G one.
• Mixed line-ups. Vodafone, Tesco Mobile, Three sell some 5G plans and some that are not. Read the row, not the brand tile.
• Lycamobile Unlimited Plus / Go Unlimited. 100 GB at 5G, then 256 kbps. That is a throttle, not 5G forever.

What to buy
