The short version: there is no single average electricity bill. At CRU typical usage (4,200 kWh a year), verified plans in August 2026 span roughly €1,295 to €2,173 a year on bill pay — and up to €2,220 on prepay. If your annual bill sits in the top half of that range, you are paying for a contract that expired, a meter type that does not suit you, or a payment method with a premium built in.

Is there an official average electricity bill in Ireland?
No — and the search result that gives you one flat figure is quietly making three decisions for you. It picks a usage level, it picks a moment in time, and it usually picks an urban 24-hour bill-pay customer. Change any of those and the "average" moves by hundreds of euro.
What Ireland does have is a standard yardstick: the CRU's typical-usage figure of 4,200 kWh of electricity a year. Every supplier must publish an Estimated Annual Bill (EAB) for each tariff at that usage, so for the first time the market can actually be compared like-for-like. That is the number this page is built on — not a survey, not a vibes average, and not a figure from a blog that was true the week it was written and never updated since. You will still find €1,766 quoted around the Irish web as "the average electricity bill"; it was a snapshot of a market that has moved several times since, and it carries no date, no usage figure and no meter type. Treat every single-number average the same way, including ours — which is why we print the check date and show the range instead.
The range is the answer. Here is what it looked like when we verified every figure on the suppliers' own sites on 28 August 2026.
What does the Estimated Annual Bill actually include?
Four things, and it matters that all four are in there — because plenty of "average bill" figures you meet elsewhere quietly leave one out:
- Unit charges — your kWh at the tariff's rate (or rates, on day/night and smart plans). At 4,200 kWh this is the bulk of the bill. If a cent-per-kWh figure means nothing to you yet, start with what a kWh is.
- The standing charge — a fixed yearly amount for having a connection at all, payable even at zero usage. It differs urban vs rural and plan vs plan; standing charges have their own page.
- The PSO levy — a flat government levy on every electricity connection: €1.59 a month including VAT until 30 September 2026, falling to €0.56 from 1 October 2026. Identical on every supplier — details here.
- VAT at 9% — applied to all of the above, at the reduced rate Budget 2026 extended to 31 December 2030.

What is the current market range at typical usage?
Every electricity plan in our dataset with a euro figure verified on the supplier's own site this week, at 4,200 kWh with urban standing charges, cheapest first. Year 1 is the price with the new-customer discount; year 2 is what the same plan costs once the discount dies. A dash means we have not verified that figure this week — we print nothing we have not checked.

The same market as a picture — the full spread between the cheapest verified deal and the dearest verified plan is about €925 a year:
Three honest readings of that picture. First, the cheapest and dearest bills are not different households — they can be the same house, because the biggest gaps come from contract age and payment method, not usage. Second, the middle of the market sits around €1,576: if your annual bill is comfortably above that at roughly typical usage, the market will pay you to move — start with cheapest electricity or the full best energy in Ireland ranking. Third, prepay occupies the top of the range on every verified figure — the spend-control features are real, but so is the premium, and prepay vs bill pay walks through when it is still worth it.
Why does my meter type change what "average" means?
Because the same 4,200 kWh is priced differently depending on when the meter says you used it. A 24-hour meter charges one rate around the clock. A NightSaver meter (window 23:00–08:00) charges a cheaper night rate and a dearer day rate. A smart tariff can split the day three ways, with a premium at the evening peak — Energia's smart day/night/peak plan, for instance, prices 17:00–19:00 above every other hour. So the EAB printed for each of those plans assumes a usage pattern as well as a total, and the "average bill" for each meter type genuinely differs.
You can see it inside single suppliers in the table above: Community Power's day/night plan prints a lower EAB than its own 24-hour plan, and Energia's smart plans undercut its standard 24-hour tariff at the same usage. None of that means a meter swap automatically saves money — shift no usage into the cheap windows and a time-of-use plan can cost more than 24-hour. The practical point for this page: only compare your bill against figures for your own meter type. A NightSaver household holding itself to a 24-hour average — or vice versa — is comparing two different products.
Do rural homes pay more than urban homes?
At the same usage, on the same plan — yes, a bit. Electricity standing charges come in two bands, DG1 (urban) and DG2 (rural), and the rural band is higher because the network cost per connection is higher. On the plans where we verified both figures this week, the gap runs to roughly €30–€75 a year depending on the supplier — for example, the cheapest verified deal in the table prints €1,295 urban and €1,356 rural on the supplier's own EAB figures.
Every figure in the table above is the urban EAB, so rural readers should mentally add their supplier's DG2 difference before judging their own bill — or check the rural columns in the main ranking, which prints both. Which band you are in is set by your connection, not your supplier, so switching never changes it.
How do I find my own number and compare it properly?
Your bill already contains everything you need — this takes five minutes and one recent bill (paper or in the app):
- Find your annual kWh. Bills show annual consumption, and every bill must also print its own Estimated Annual Bill. If you can only see a single period's kWh, add up the last 12 months in the app rather than multiplying one period out.
- Note your meter type. 24-hour, NightSaver (day and night registers) or smart — it is on the bill next to the meter details. Only compare against plans for that meter type.
- Note urban or rural. The bill says DG1 or DG2 near the meter details. Rural adds a fixed amount to every figure on this page.
- Check which side of month 12 you are on. Inside a discounted year, judge yourself against the year-1 column; past it, against year-2 — that one distinction explains most "why is my bill huge?" mysteries, and year 1 vs year 2 explains the cliff.
- Compare your kWh to 4,200, then scale your expectation. If you use close to 4,200 kWh, read the table directly. If not, the honest rough cut is: (your kWh ÷ 4,200) × the unit-charge part of an EAB, plus the standing charge and PSO unchanged — the fixed charges do not shrink with usage, which is exactly why low-usage homes should weight the standing charge heavily. If that check puts your annual cost near the top of the verified range, the fix is rarely behavioural — it is contractual. Reducing your electricity bill starts with the switch for precisely that reason.
Why is comparing monthly bill figures a trap?
The summer-month trap: the fastest way to get the wrong answer is to take one bill and multiply it out. Electricity usage is winter-weighted — lighting, tumble-drying, the immersion, plug-in heaters — so a summer bill times twelve (or times six, on two-monthly billing) understates your year badly, and a January bill overstates it just as badly. The neighbour comparing their "€90 a month" against your "€150" may simply be on a smoothed direct debit, a different billing month, or an estimated read.
Compare annual kWh and annual euro, never a single month's figure. Both are printed on the bill.
Monthly numbers have one legitimate use: budgeting a level-pay direct debit. For that, the arithmetic is the annual figure divided by twelve — roughly €108 a month at the cheapest verified deal, €131 at the middle of the market, €181 on the dearest standard rate at typical usage. Just remember those are accounting conveniences: the meter does not use electricity in twelfths, and a smoothed direct debit that is set too low simply stores up a balancing bill for later.
Is the average electricity bill going up or down in 2026?
Both, depending on which line you watch. On the way up: Electric Ireland raised electricity prices 8% from 1 July 2026 (its first rise since October 2022, standing charges unchanged), Prepay Power raised electricity 8.8% from 1 June 2026, Pinergy has a 7.6% rise landing 14 September 2026, and Energia and SSE Airtricity both raised residential prices in late 2025. On the way down: the PSO levy falls from €1.59 to €0.56 a month including VAT on 1 October 2026 — worth about €12 a year to every household — and the 9% VAT rate is locked in to the end of 2030.
Net effect: the range on this page drifts, which is why we date it rather than carve it in stone. The rhythm worth internalising is that your average is mostly set by one event — the day your discount expires — not by market-wide moves of a few percent. A dated 8% rise changes a €1,500 bill by €120; drifting onto a standard rate changes it by €878. Watch your month 12 first and the news second.
