Energia Review Ireland 2026
Energia is priced for people who switch, not people who stay. Sign up in month 0 and the discount is one of the deepest any big Irish brand offers — 30% off electricity units, worth over €500 a year at typical usage. Do nothing at month 12 and the same account rolls onto a 42.65c standard unit rate. This review works through the whole cycle: what you pay on day one, what to do at month 11, and what month 13 costs if you forget.
Energia review: key takeaways
- ✓Month 0: the Standard 24 Hour plan lands at a €1,538 urban EAB in year 1 (checked 28 Aug 2026) — Energia’s own figure, and among the sharpest big-brand offers on the market.
- ✓Month 13: the same home on the standard rate pays about €2,075 — a €537 jump for changing nothing. The discount is a 12-month loan of a good price, not the price.
- ✓Set a phone reminder for month 11. Ring Energia and ask for a new customer-grade discount; if the answer is weak, the switch to the next supplier takes 2–4 weeks and supply never cuts.
- ✓The exit fee is €50 per fuel (€100 on dual fuel), so even a mid-contract escape is affordable maths, not a trap.
- ✓Electricity rose from 9 October 2025 — +10.9% on standard plans and +12.1% on smart plans — so mid-contract variable movement is a live risk, not a theory. Gas was spared.
- ✓The 100% green badge is annual Guarantee-of-Origin certificate matching. Real wind farms sit behind the group, but the badge is paperwork, not a private supply.

Plans and estimated annual bills
Estimated Annual Bills (EAB) at CRU typical usage — 4,200 kWh electricity, 11,000 kWh gas — including standing charges, PSO (electricity), carbon tax (gas) and 9% VAT. Urban (DG1) figures; rural (DG2) standing charges are higher. Year 1 is with the new-customer discount, year 2 is the standard rate the same plan lands on. A dash means we have not verified the figure this week — we never invent one.

Who it’s for
Energia suits the organised switcher: the household that keeps a note of its contract end date, rings for a retention offer at month 11, and leaves without sentiment if the answer is no. It sells electricity, gas and dual fuel, so one-account households are covered, and its smart plans (checked 28 Aug 2026, the Smart Data plan has Energia’s cheapest published EAB at €1,382) reward homes that can dodge the 17:00–19:00 peak. It is a poor match for set-and-forget households — the standard rate is exactly where Energia makes its money back — and there is no prepay option at all.
Get it if
- You switch (or genuinely intend to) every 12 months and want the deepest big-brand discount going — 30% off electricity units
- You want electricity, gas and dual fuel available on one account from a large, established supplier
- You have a smart meter and can shift washing, drying and EV charging away from 17:00–19:00 — Smart Data’s €1,382 EAB is the sharpest figure Energia publishes
- You value a cheap escape hatch: €50 per fuel is one of the milder exit fees in the market
Skip it if
- You know you will not re-shop at month 12 — the ~€537 standard-rate jump is priced on exactly that
- You need prepay/PAYG — Energia does not offer it
- You want a fixed price for the term: Energia’s discounts ride on variable rates, and October 2025 proved they can rise mid-contract
- You are buying the 100% green badge as evidence — it is GO certificate matching, and greener-evidenced options exist
What they sell
Electricity. The core product. A 30% new-customer unit discount on the Standard 24 Hour and Smart 24 Hour plans, 27% on Smart Data (three time bands with a 17:00–19:00 peak). Standing charges — €265.01 urban, €337.02 rural per year — are never discounted. All plans run 12 months with a €50 exit fee.
Gas. A quieter offer: 10% off the 11.26c standard unit rate, worth about €124 a year at 11,000 kWh. Gas escaped the October 2025 rise entirely. Carbon tax (about €138 a year at the current Revenue rate of 1.25c/kWh — the rise to €71/tonne has been pushed out to 14 October 2026) and the €141.60 standing charge apply whoever supplies you.
Dual fuel. Electricity and gas on one account with a 26% bundle discount; the gas side runs at 25% off units, deeper than standalone gas. Convenient — but two fuels means two €50 exit fees, and you should still price each fuel separately before bundling.
Smart Track (dynamic). Energia’s wholesale-linked tariff: unit rates change every half hour, published a day in advance. It needs a smart meter with a CTF comms score of 4. Genuinely cheap for EV-at-2am households; genuinely risky for evening-peak families. One plan row here — the full explainer is a separate guide.
Our verdict
Judge Energia by the lifecycle it is built around. Month 0 is genuinely good: a €1,538 year-1 urban EAB on the standard plan and €1,382 on Smart Data are Energia’s own published figures (28 August 2026), and they undercut what a never-switched household pays almost anywhere. Month 11 is where the relationship is decided — Energia does not post a loyalty discount to your account unprompted. And month 13 is the bill Energia would prefer you never calculate: about €2,075 on the same urban home, a 42.65c unit rate doing exactly what teaser pricing is designed to do.
The second question we ask of any big brand is how it treats people mid-contract, and here the record is mixed. The October 2025 rise — +10.9% on standard electricity, +12.1% on smart plans, gas untouched — landed on discounted and standard customers alike, because the discount is a percentage off a variable rate, not a fixed price. Customers report a solid enough app and broadly decent service (Trustpilot sits around four stars), with the familiar big-supplier complaints about billing surprises and price-change notice. The €50-per-fuel exit fee is the redeeming clause: when the maths turns against you, leaving costs less than one month of a bad standard rate.
Our verdict weights value and flexibility over green marketing: 7.3. Energia earns its place on every switcher’s shortlist — alongside SSE Airtricity among the big alternatives and Yuno at the cheap end — and we would happily take its year-1 price. We just would not still be standing there at month 13. Put the reminder in your phone before the welcome pack arrives.
How we reviewed Energia: every euro figure was checked on energia.ie on 28 August 2026 — plan pages, the tariff table and the domestic terms and conditions. Year-1 urban EABs are Energia’s own published figures, which we reconciled to the cent against unit rate × 4,200 kWh + standing charge + PSO + 9% VAT. Year-2, rural and gas figures are computed from Energia’s published rates and are labelled as such. Reputation claims come from what customers report on Trustpilot and Irish forums, not our own account history. matched.ie is not a CRU-accredited price-comparison site — see how we test.

Energia: frequently asked questions
How much does Energia electricity cost in Ireland right now?+
On the figures Energia published as of 28 August 2026: the Standard 24 Hour plan has a year-1 estimated annual bill of €1,538 for a typical urban home (4,200 kWh), using a 29.86c discounted unit rate. Smart Data is cheaper again at €1,382 if you avoid the 17:00–19:00 peak. Rural homes pay about €72 more because the standing charge is €337.02 rather than €265.01.
What happens to my Energia bill after the first 12 months?+
The new-customer discount ends and units revert to the standard rate — 42.65c/kWh on the 24-hour plan against 29.86c in year 1. At typical usage that lifts an urban bill from about €1,538 to about €2,075, roughly €537 more for identical usage. Energia does not automatically apply a new discount, so ring for a retention offer at month 11 or switch away.
Does Energia charge an exit fee if I leave early?+
Yes — €50 per fuel if you cancel after the 14-day cooling-off period and before your fixed term ends (clause 13.4 of Energia’s domestic terms, checked 28 August 2026). Dual-fuel customers pay €100 because each fuel counts separately. There is no fee once the 12 months are up, and doorstep sign-ups get a 30-day cooling-off instead of 14.
Did Energia put its prices up recently?+
The last rise took effect on 9 October 2025: standard electricity plans went up 10.9%, smart-meter electricity plans 12.1%, and the dual-fuel versions 6% and 6.2%. Gas rates were not increased. Energia blamed higher system-operator and network charges. Because its discounts are a percentage off variable rates, a mid-contract rise lifts discounted customers’ bills too — worth knowing before you sign.
Is Energia really 100% green electricity?+
The claim is real but narrower than it sounds. Energia matches its household electricity sales with Guarantees of Origin — certificates proving a megawatt-hour of renewable power was generated somewhere in Europe. The group does own Irish wind farms, which is more substance than some rivals offer, but every home draws from the same national grid. If verified green sourcing is your deciding factor, weigh the evidence, not the badge.
What is Energia Smart Track and who should use it?+
Smart Track is Energia’s dynamic tariff: unit prices change every half hour, set a day ahead by the wholesale electricity market. You need a smart meter with a CTF communications score of 4. It can beat every fixed-style plan if you charge an EV or run appliances overnight, and it can cost more than the standard rate if your usage peaks at teatime. No meaningful annual bill estimate exists — your habits are the price.
Does Energia do gas, dual fuel or prepay?+
Gas and dual fuel, yes; prepay, no. Standalone gas gets 10% off the 11.26c unit rate — about €124 a year at typical 11,000 kWh usage — while the dual-fuel bundle discounts gas units by 25%. There is no pay-as-you-go option, so households that want top-up budgeting need a prepay specialist instead. Remember dual fuel means two €50 exit fees if you leave mid-contract.
How do I switch to or away from Energia?+
Either direction, the new supplier does the work. You need your MPRN (the 11-digit number on your electricity bill), your GPRN (7 digits) for gas, and a current meter reading. The switch typically completes in 2–4 weeks and your supply is never interrupted — only the name on the bill changes. Check where you are in your existing contract first: leaving Energia mid-term costs €50 per fuel, leaving at month 12+ costs nothing.
